    THE ACE COURSES – FEEDBACK

Well over 100 pieces of feedback received, all positive. This is an edited but representative selection. The language in the feedback shows that the reviewers are already at an advanced level. However, they are still very enthusiastic. Most of them are lawyers, ranging from retired partners to trainees, but a few aren’t

Some have done all the courses but most have only done the main course, GENERAL, either in its current form or in an earlier form.

The feedback comes from China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Myanmar, The Netherlands, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, the UAE and Vietnam.

Former Senior Partner for Germany of Magic Circle Firm, Berlin

I found your quizzes entertaining and helpful as they not only point out and help to avoid very common mistakes but also provide a glimpse into the English legal system.

Polish trainee solicitor (England & Wales). English already good enough to pass professional exams and get training contract.

    Very helpful.

Italian lawyer and English solicitor - 15 years in a major investment bank

Pretty addictive! Looks and feel professional and the review at the end is really good. I wish you had done this 15 years ago!

Former partner in Magic Circle firm, now retired, solicitor and native speaker of English, worked a lot in Asia

I have done the CONTRACTS and COMPANIES courses. I thought they were good and that they would be very useful for most young (and in fact not-so-young) lawyers who work a lot in English but aren’t native speakers.

They deal with many of the errors I have seen people make over the years and provide a useful introduction to aspects of English contract and companies law.

    Professor and Senior Associate, Rome

My feedback on the course is very positive. It is a very useful and time-saving tool. It is user-friendly and goes directly to the point.

It is different from any other course I had tried before because it addresses "English in practice" and is really conceived for lawyers.

The user does not get bored.

    Counsel, Luxembourg

I like the structure of the quizzes, with corrections, detailed explanation and possibility of reattempting. I appreciated having a nutshell UK law course. We often work on UK law documents so that terminology knowledge is useful.

GM, Legal Department - subsidiary of major trading company, Japan

It is very helpful to revise my legal English in detail and I believe that this will contribute to improving my legal writing.

Thank you for providing me with such an excellent learning opportunity.

    Lawyer, Warsaw

It is a great learning tool and it is clear that you have put a great deal of work into it. The result is truly impressive. Whenever I made a mistake, I received an explanation which was sufficient for me to understand why I made this error and, hopefully, to allow me to avoid it in the future. As this is basically the purpose of this course, I have to say that this is a job well done.

Group Leader, Financial Planning and Analysis Dept, Japanese company

Very Good. I learn a lot of new things every time. I liked the explanations in each quiz and the links to the further definitions in the Glossary which we could use if we wanted.

Although the quizzes are for lawyers, many situations and contexts fit also any business environment.

I felt the quizzes were designed well for Japanese to realise typical errors we make because of the influence of our own language.

    Avocat, Luxembourg

The tool is extremely important and helpful for the day-to-day work in a big law firm.

    Associate, Moscow

All of these courses are very useful for most lawyers working in English. The questions and examples are so real – they deal with practical situations and common mistakes. I love the detailed and modern explanations – they are so different from classical analogs.

    Lawyer, Hanoi

It is not just English, it is really English for lawyers, that is why it is close to my work and helpful for my English improvement. I also feel the passion and the inspiration that you transfer to learners in the course, and I am sure that other learners will have the same good feeling like mine when they attend your course.

    Lawyer, Beijing

One thing amazing about your course is you know so well about how lawyers, regardless of being native speakers or not, make use of English language as their working language. This would bring all my errors back to life when I encountered similar contexts in real work.

I have enjoyed the courses very much and I believe every student would find them excellent

    Counsel, St Petersburg

First of all, let me thank you for the opportunity to go through your course and a truly unique experience that I have received while doing exciting quizzes and exercises.

I believe that your course does have several very peculiar features that positively differentiate it from other English language courses. Your course is based on legal vocabulary and on those situations that happen in our day-to-day lawyer’s life. These make it really practical and right to the point. In addition, all quizzes are reasonably short. It is a separate bonus, since time is of very special importance and meaning for us.

Thank you so much for your wise and humorous comments and usage explanations. Studying with your course has never been boring. It has been a perfect match of fun, ease and practical information.

    PSL, Magic Circle firm, Tokyo

My impression of the quizzes I have done was that they are all quite tricky and if you were not paying attention and just reading through the text, then you will get it wrong. But then again, if you think it is tricky and think too much, then you will get it wrong as well!! In general, I thought the quizzes were useful and fun to go through.

Senior Associate, Dubai (native speaker of Arabic)

The course does an excellent job of combining language learning with the legal concepts lawyers need for communicating in a global English environment. Indeed, I found it enjoyable and educational and learnt a lot from it.

    Trainee Lawyer, Frankfurt

The course is perfectly tailored to the needs of young lawyers and legal professionals. You don ot only learn something about the usage of the language in a legal context, but you also get some general information about legal systems (common law /civil law), economy (Debt / Equity / Warrants; registered shares / bearer shares) and even about the geography of Great Britain.

    Senior Associate, Bangkok

The Course was excellent and very useful. I love the questions – they are so real! (i.e. they are what I have been using (sometimes right and sometimes wrong) almost every day at work). I read all the explanations and glossary entries. For me, they are just perfect. I am a person who loves detailed explanations. I can learn a lot from your explanations and glossary entries.

    Paralegal, Moscow

I really enjoyed taking the course! I loved how interactive and informative it was and it is fascinating how you managed to combine grammar and vocabulary with cultural nuances and even legal problems.

Associate, Singapore – educated in English, gave feedback orally

When I met him, XY had been busy and had not managed to complete the course. However, he had done some of the course and his comments overall were positive. When he is less busy, he intends to complete the course which, in its way, is also positive feedback. He said that the quizzes made him think about language, that the language tested was relevant and that he found the quiz format engaging.

    Paralegal, Moscow

I consider improving my English skills as a very important issue.

I have completed Companies and Contracts courses. The content is great. The Contracts course vocabulary is what I really use in my everyday work.

    Lawyer, Hanoi

Some background information about myself: I learnt English from schools in Vietnam and 2.5 years studying and working in the US. I have practised law for 7 years with international firms where English is my primary working language. Despite that I still cannot pass your tests. Below are my two cents:

    • Generally, I think it is a very good course
    • The content is relevant and spot on. I am surprised how many errors I have taken for granted in my daily use of English. This “surprising” part makes your course interesting and makes learners keep go on with the quizzes to see what else they may answer incorrectly.
    • The format of short and quick quizzes is suitable to lawyers who usually do not have much time. It also allows learners to stop a quiz anytime they want and revisit in the future.

    Intern, Moscow

I think the courses are very useful. The form of courses (quizzes and detailed analyses of mistakes) allows studying during trips or breaks at work. Explanation of mistakes is very clear and catchy.

    Lawyer, Moscow

The course is extremely helpful for lawyers (and I believe not only for them) since it covers exactly the topics which are of difficulty for non-native speakers.

Translator and Corporate Affairs Assistant, Yangon

The Course is very good. One of the good things about the Course is that it provides a glossary and I find it helpful and useful.

The Course is effective and resourceful because it gives examples and explanations in legal context and I can link them to real life situations.

Last but not least, I can do the Quizzes in my free time for self-study.

    Associate, Yangon

The Course is very good and very useful for us. It has improved my English skill especially in writing because various grammatical structures are included in the Course

    Senior Paralegal, Moscow

Lots of useful phrases for written correspondence and oral conversation. I see most of them on a daily basis.

Explanation of various English law legal terms is also useful as we usually deal with English law documents.

Several idiomatic expressions are covered. I have never heard of most of them. But it still was interesting.

Grammatical exercise part is a great advantage as it serves as a reminder from school times (in course of work we are reluctant to think about grammar rules all the time).

Comprehensive explanations to tasks + glossary.

Trainee Solicitor, Hong Kong (educated in English so already at a v advanced level)

I enjoyed the test a lot and have even spoken to some of my law school friends about what I have learnt. I am quite surprised to see that the course content hit a lot of the common myth / common misunderstanding of my friends who are non-native English speakers. Many thanks for your great initiative. It is a really great opportunity for me to brush up my English

    Associate, Milan

The course is very good: you get in few minutes a lot of important notions : it provides you, for each single question, the grammar rule. This is a very simple and fast way to identify your weakness.

A good thing is that it focuses only on matters/errors relevant for lawyers. I have already recommended it to some colleagues!

I liked the way the explanations and glossary entries are structured: you can read them only if you are interested (and skip them if you are not).

    Counsel, Luxembourg

Doing the Course was not only challenging but also very instructive.I really learnt from my errors, which is definitely more important than the scores I got.

    Lawyer, Madrid

I also found very interesting that the course focuses on legal vocabulary and scenarios, so it is very practical for Spanish lawyer to learn the use of the different rules. It is difficult to find a legal course with these characteristics.

    PSL, Madrid

Good things: quizzes quick to take, immediate feedback, useful explanations. I definitely think it is worth doing it as I always learn something new.

    PA, Madrid

The Course was good. I find all the examples useful, as in most cases are related to the vocabulary we normally use at work. I would highly recommend the Course to a colleague. I read most of the explanations, especially the ones that I had problems with. I found them very useful.

    Transactional Support Lawyer, Amsterdam

    Very good.

Paralegal, Hong Kong, native speaker of Mandarin

I enjoyed the Course very much. It is indeed a very good Course. I like the detailed explanation in the review and the humorous ways you explain certain question.

    Lawyer, Bucharest

The Course is very good, the explanations, examples and the glossary entries are very useful. The course was very easy to use and navigate and I have already recommended it to my colleagues.

    Legal Translator, Warsaw

I particularly appreciate the fact that the course was not another course dealing with tenses, conditionals and reported speech, but all these “small words” and nuances, as this is the field where even proficient language users often make mistakes and follow the clichés of their mother tongue.

Another advantage of the course is the fact that modules are not very time consuming, so you can turn on the course whenever you have a short break in your regular work.

I also like the fact that you first do a quiz and only then you have an opportunity to read the explanations – if you do well, you do not need to waste time on reading things you know and understand.

    Lawyer, Bucharest

I would definitely recommend your course to all learners, regardless of their level. Even if one believes that s/he is advanced, a chance to polish up certain areas of usual concern shall never be missed.

    Lawyer, Bucharest

The course has been a great help in terms of legal English, emphasizing the differences or slight differences between various words which, unfortunately are confusing sometimes. I really appreciated that we can retake the quiz, thus, memorizing much better the rules and the correct answers. This was really helpful.

Billing specialist (and former eLearning course designer), Paris

To put it in a nutshell, I found the tests questions and situations, together with their thorough explanations, very, useful, sensitive, relevant and accurate.

It’s just fantastic, I can learn a lot and this is a real asset for everyday work at the Firm. What I appreciated most: The “in the field” / “real life” quality of the test situations.

    Banking Lawyer, Bucharest

It was a real pleasure to find a course that exactly suited my work and exactly the aspects I was wondering about. I very much appreciated some of the legal definitions and the presentation of legal concepts. I am very fond of the glossary which I have printed out and will keep on my desk from now on.

    Associate, Beijing

I find the Course good and would recommend it to my colleagues. The quizzes and explanations have answered quite a few questions that have haunted me in my day-today English writing. In fact, I’m delighted to know that there are others who care about these questions.

    Associate, Jakarta

What I like the most from the course is that we can see the review of our answers. This feature allows us to identify our mistakes and shows the correct answer along with the explanation. Furthermore, the tests are relevant to my profession as it is designed for lawyers. I think this program is very helpful for improving our English especially for lawyers whose first language is not English like myself.

    Associate, Luxembourg

The examples are really similar to the clauses we draft / read every day. The reviews provide a complete summary of each point. Very useful.

    Lawyer, Shanghai

First, I would like to congratulate you and thank you for designing such a practical English learning website for lawyers. I have truly benefited a great deal from it. It is user friendly and straight-forward.

Support Staff, Germany or India (not stated on feedback form)
    1. It is useful that one gets precise explanations of the right result of each task/question, so that you can understand what was wrong with your answer and you can improve.
    2. I think this course should have a percentage of marks to define pass / fail, and this should be part of the recruitment process. Any employee, especially junior lawyer should pass this test before getting hired for the firm.
